ST. LOUIS, MO – Harris-Stowe State University (HSSU) has hired Jamaal Mayo as its new Director of Athletics effective April 27. Mayo was previously the assistant athletic director for development at Western Carolina University (WCU) in Cullowhee, N.C.hssu jamaal mayoMayo

Since 2013, Mayo led the fundraising arm of WCU’s Department of Athletics where he managed a sizeable portfolio of donors. His responsibilities also included capital campaign planning, directing former athlete initiatives and supervising the men's and women's track and field programs.

“With the caliber of experience Mr. Mayo brings to our Athletics Department, HSSU is on its way to becoming one of the region’s premier higher education institutions that also has a top quality sports program able to attract talented student athletes,” said Dr. Dwaun J. Warmack, president, Harris-Stowe State University.

Originally from Hillsborough, N.C., Mayo is a 2003 graduate of Western Carolina University, earning his bachelor's degree in sports management while also playing quarterback for the Catamount football program. Mayo returned to his alma mater in August of 2006 to work in the Office of Admissions as the senior assistant director of admissions focusing on minority student recruitment after a brief stint with the Durham Bulls as the team's group ticket sales associate.

Harris-Stowe University is based in midtown St. Louis and sponsors nine varsity sports. They are a member of NAIA's American Midwest Conference.
