New Year's Day parade watchers will be happy to know that two HBCU bands will be participating in the 130th Rose Parade presented by Honda, themed “The Melody of Life.” The Alabama State University "Mighty Marching Hornets" and "The Incomparable Marching 100" from Florida A&M University will join 20 other bands from around the world in one of the most famous and recognized parade events in the nation.

This will be the first appearance for both bands.

The Tournament of Roses Parade provides an opportunity to participate in a unique platform to entertain millions of viewers on one of the most recognized stages in the world. More than 60 million people will view the parade worldwide and as many as 700,000 will watch the performance in person.

“Our students continue to be recognized for their hard work and dedication,” ASU’s Band Director Dr. James Oliver said. “We are really excited to see our hard work recognized on a national platform.

Shelby Chipman, Director of Marching And Pep Bands at FAMU, said it’s a great honor to be selected and it will put the spotlight on the university. the parade is a big deal."

Bands are selected by volunteer members of the Tournament of Roses based on a variety of criteria including musicianship, marching ability, and entertainment or special interest value. In order to be considered, band representatives submitted detailed applications, which included photos, video footage and letters of recommendation. Throughout the year, bands organized fundraisers to support all necessary funds for travel and accommodations. In addition to marching in the five-and-a-half-mile Rose Parade on New Year’s Day, bands also perform in one of three Bandfest events scheduled for December 29 and 30, 2018 at Pasadena City College.
