MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. - Eight Florida Memorial University teams have committed to not hold athletic-related activities on Election Day – Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2020 – to encourage student-athletes and staff members to exercise their right to vote.florida memorial lion

The eight teams that have pledged to not hold athletic-related activities include football, volleyball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, cheerleading, men’s indoor track and field, women’s indoor track and field, and women’s flag football.

"As an athletic department, now is the time for us to act, to demonstrate national leadership and to signal to our student-athletes that voting matters,” said Ernest T. Jones, FMU Director of Athletics. “We want them to exercise their responsibility to have their voices heard and vote."

For many teams, the off day will come during the heart of preparation for upcoming competitions. Notably, FMU football hosts Southeastern University on Saturday, Nov. 7 and volleyball, the defending Sun Conference champion, will be nearing the end of its postseason.

“Making voting a priority sends a message to our student-athletes,” said Marrita Crockett-Moulton, FMU Head Volleyball Coach. “The history of the African-American community struggle to gain the right to vote in this country is critically important, especially with us being the only HBCU in our conference and in South Florida.”

“We support having a day off from athletic activities to make sure our student-athletes have an opportunity to vote and have their voices heard on Nov. 3, especially in light of recent events,” said Ansar Al-Ameen, FMU Head Men’s Basketball Coach. “While there are many ways to have an impact, very likely none are more important than at the ballot box.”

There are 11 teams and nearly 300 student-athletes at Florida Memorial.
