Morehouse, CAU grid teams back on the road again this weekend

masonry football classic logoATLANTA- The Maroon Tigers of Morehouse and the Panthers of Clark-Atlanta University were saved the chore of unpacking, then repacking their bags for this weekend’s contests. Both are on the road for the second straight weekend. The Maroon Tigers will battle Miles College Saturday afternoon at 6pm (EDT) in the latter’s Sloan Alumni Stadium. This will be the 42nd meeting between the rivals. Morehouse leads the series 26-16. Meanwhile, 232 miles north of Fairfield, CAU takes on the Lane College Dragons in Jackson, Tennessee at 3pm(EDT). CAU rolls into town with a 2-1 overall record while Lane College (1-2) hopes for a second win of the season.

Morehouse picked up their second win of the season last weekend against the Lions of Central State of Ohio.

Despite CSO ‘s 0-3 record, the 35-33 victory for Morehouse was no snap as the Marauders, led by Cedric Pearl, cnst cetric pearlPearlwho at one time was an assistant coach at Morehouse, Morris Brown and Tuskegee , matched the Tigers score for score. It was, however, a banner day for Tiger senior quarterbackmhc kivon taylorMorehouse's Taylor Kivon Taylor. He threw for 247 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a third score. Morehouse did commit two costly turnovers that the Marauders turned into scores. Then, an 85 yard run from scrimmage by Central State gave the Marauders a two point lead ,33-28 late in the fourth quarter. But then Morehouse’s offense roared back with a touchdown of their own which turned out to be the winning score.

CAU, meanwhile, faced a formidable offense from Tuskegee which scored three times in the first period enroute to a 30-16 win.

But the scoring deluge neither bent nor broke Kevin Ramsey’s cardinal and black. Senior QB Johnathan McCrary threw for 155 yards and a touchdown. Place-kicker Carlos Saldana was 3-3 in field goals, his longest 42 yards . His 39 yard field goal in the second allowed CAU to move to within 3 points of the Tuskegee lead.

Unfortunately, that’s when CAU’s scoring stopped. The Panthers’ Achilles heel was turnovers. The team committed four, with three of them resulting in scores. A fumble late in the fourth period by the Panthers produced the final touchdown for the Golden Tigers. The win moves Tuskegee to 2-1 and second place in the conference’s western division .

ELSEWHERE IN THE SIAC: Tuskegee travels to Findlay, Ohio Saturday to face the 2-1 Oilers. This is the first meeting between the two…..Kentucky-Wesleyan’s comeback attempt fizzled, allowing Kentucky State to hang tough and win their home opener 30-23. Thorobred quarterback Paul ksu paul campbellKSU's CampbellCampbell threw two touchdowns and rushed for another….Trailing 21-20 in the third period, Benedict scored twice in the fourth, shut down Lane scoring and beat the Dragons 31-20…..After an 0-2 start, Miles College used two touchdown, a fumble ,two field goals and a safety to spoil Fort Valley’s home opener 29-10…..Albany State had their 2-0 win string broken and their home opener spoiled last week by the visiting Crusaders of North Greenville 35-27.
The visitors grabbed the lead early and wouldn’t let go. Despite the loss, the Rams maintain first place in the SIAC’s eastern division….

circle city classic logoXTRA POINTS: The 34th Circle City Classic kicks off Saturday in Indianapolis, Indiana. The SIAC has benefitted SIAC schools the last few years. This year is no different. Kentucky State will take on Central State. Both are in the SIAC’s western division and the Circle City represents the first division game for both. A win could push one of them further up the western division and would be especially satisfying for the Marauders since they are having a little trouble thus far entering the winners circle. Me thinks Pearl and his elevens are much better than winless…….The Miles –Morehouse game is also an opportunity for Alabama’s “traveling men” to observe and celebrate the game as the Prince Hall Masons Americanism Football Classic.
The occasion was born four years ago through an agreement between Alabama State and the Grand Lodge of Alabama in 2014. As a “brother” myself with Atlanta’s St James #4 lodge, I applaud my fellow brothers and sisters of the Order of the Eastern Star and wish them well this weekend. …….
